COMPUTER SECURITY - What you need to know

Warning: People want your data!

Have you ever wondered if your data is secure? Most people are aware to watch for the little lock on their computer when they are doing online transactions, but what about the data that is actually on your computer or laptop?

With all of the privacy breaches and loss of key information due to laptop theft, we thought our customers might be interested in some things you can do to secure your data if your laptop is stolen:

  1. Make sure you are using strong passwords – meaning a password that has at least three of the four: uppercase, lowercase, numbers, or symbols. While you are at it, make sure it is at least 6 characters long, and don’t write it down and tape it to the bottom of your laptop! We suggest you use the first letters of a phrase that you are sure to remember, for example: I really enjoy working with Dynamic Edge, they are great! Would become the following password: IrewwDE,tag! – note that we used the capital letters and punctuation in this phrase.

  2. Encrypt personal data or files that you don’t want people to read! You can use a free piece of software for this called TrueCrypt.

        >> Click here for step by step directions on using TrueCrypt!

  3. Make sure you backup your data! This way if your laptop is lost or stolen, you don’t have to recreate it.

If you are worried about the data on your network, or you need some help with TrueCrypt, do not hesitate to give us a call. We have a number of people who specialize in security and can help you audit your existing systems, help create a security policy, and address any problems with your current security set.
